FAQs

Getting involved

Are you on social media?

Absolutely! Reading Sustainability Centre is on Facebook and Twitter. (We have also have a Facebook group if you’d like to discuss sustainability themes online.) You can also follow Refill in Reading on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

If you don’t ‘do social media’, you can still sign up for email newsletters. We don’t send them out very often.

How can I get involved?

Simply drop us a line, and let us know what you’re interested in. There are a range of ways to get involved. You can attend our meetings (we meet six weekly as a ‘steering group’), help us work on an upcoming project (if there is a particular strand of our work that interests you) or write something for the website (we are always looking for interesting news items) … or a mixture. Another way to get involved is to follow us on the web, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and spread the sustainable Reading message!

What if I have a question for Reading Sustainability Centre?

Just drop us a line using the contact form and we will try and answer it. If it is the sort of question a lot of people might ask, we’ll also publish the answer here. But do go easy on us. We are all volunteers.

Projects and campaigns

What projects have you worked on so far?

We are a small team, all of us volunteers. We want to have an impact and know that the best way to do that is to make connections with projects that are already showing the way, locally or further afield, as well as encourage new collaborations and experiments where we think they will help get us closer to a sustainable Reading (and that we think will be fun to develop).

Recent and current projects are:

  • Refill in Reading: Promoting take-up of the national tap water Refill scheme in Reading as well as Reading’s own Refill Reading reusable coffee cup campaign. Whilst initially the emphasis was upon cups, bottles and places to refill, increasingly we are talking about the habit of refilling in general.
  • Resourceful Reading: During May and June 2019 the Resourceful Reading pop-up display at Reading Museum got people talking about the range of ways in which people in Reading are starting to get to grips with our wasteful ways by refusing, reducing, reusing, recycling, redesigning and reimagining. We are hoping that the display can pop-up again, perhaps with a supporting programme of walks, talks and discussions.
  • ‘Pop-up’ activities and advice: We don’t have a physical base, but we are always looking for opportunities pop-up and experiment to prompt discussion and find out what a centre might offer.

When was Reading Sustainability Centre established?

Discussions began amongst Green Groups and this led to an informal group being launched from GREN in early 2014, but it wasn’t until January 2015 that The Reading Sustainability Centre was established as a Community Interest Company.

Where are you based?

At the moment we are a virtual centre – but work out of RISC sometimes, with the long term goal of developing a physical space that can be used for eco education and as a base for collaborative projects.

Reading Sustainability Centre

We are an education project linked to Transition Town Reading and Reading Hydro. Our goal is that Reading is recognised as a leader in practical action on sustainability, as well as a great place to live.

We are mostly virtual at the moment, but are working with a variety of partners to support the development of local sustainability experiments as well as ‘pop-up’ exhibitions and events. So please do keep checking back, or sign up for updates below. If you’d like to get more directly involved just drop us a line.

There is more about Reading Sustainability Centre on our Who we are page.
