Below is an imagined letter from one of first visitors.
Dear Sustainability Centre Management Team,
We greatly enjoyed and benefited from our visit last week. We were already aware that our house was little bit draughty in places. Having looked at the exhibitions at the Centre we now realise that it’s not difficult to do something about the drafts and that in doing so we will be better off and warmer as well as this, we would be saving energy too. We wish that we had visited the Centre a few years ago and have now decided to replace the thermostat on our heating system as it doesn’t really control the heating efficiently or as we need it to.
After we had visited the new Sustainability Centre in Reading we realised that we needed to make a lot of changes in the way that we were living. Some of the things that we learnt quite shocked us. For instance, we hadn’t realised how much food we had been wasting or how much this was costing us. We have decided to be much more careful about what we buy, when we buy it, and how we store it. We have also decided that we will recycle and reuse our own food waste whenever we possibly can do this safely.
We have got a small garden and have dreamed about growing fruit and vegetables in it. After seeing your permaculture garden we bought some seeds and will soon be growing at least some of our own food. Mum gave us some herbs to encourage us to grow these and they look and smell good already. This will not save us much money but we are so looking forward to eating our own produce.
We have a lot of stuff stored in our loft so much so that we can’t access some of it very easily. When the people came to give us free loft insulation they said they could not do it unless we cleared the loft, so we didn’t get the insulation. We will now clear a lot of the junk out of our loft and do the insulation properly; as we only have a very small amount of insulation up there the people at the centre reckon that we will be noticeably warmer and probably not have to keep cleaning condensation mould off our ceilings either.
We would like to thank the Centre for everything that it’s doing; we will be telling all our friends and neighbours to come down because we are certain that they will benefit too. Once again thanks very much for all that you have done for us we love what you are doing and can agree with others that you are helping to make Reading a better place.
Thanks millions Bill and Cat.
